Whisky of the Month: Highland Park 12-Year-Old
Orkney · Single Malt · 43% ABV
Highland Park occupies a unique place in Scotch whisky. Whisky born on the main Island in the town of Kirkwall, which is roughly the latitude of the southern tip of Greenland. Its gentle peat smoke is balanced by honeyed sweetness and a subtle maritime character.
Tasting Notes
- Nose: Heather honey, light smoke, dried fruit
- Palate: Malt sweetness, spice, soft peat
- Finish: Medium length with lingering warmth
Highland Park demonstrates the beauty of balance—peat, sweetness, and spice working together rather than competing. It is a Society favorite.
🌎 Beyond Scotland
Irish Whiskey Sidebar: Redbreast 12 Year
Distilled at Midleton Distillery, Redbreast represents the classic Irish single pot still style using the triple distillation common to Irish whiskies making it very smooth.
Expect rich malt, dried fruit, and warm spice. Placed beside Highland Park, it shows how two neighboring whisky traditions can share heritage while expressing very different personalities.
📝 Society Notes
- Our August meeting will be held at Cellar 426 Winery in Ashland, Nebraska located at 1005 Prairie Agate Drive on August 29th from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. Cost is $26.95 per person plus tax for non-members, and $16 for paid members. This will include a tour of the winery and a wine tasting and a social time afterward. The winery closes at 9:00 p.m. Please RSVP to events@omahawhisk.org
- Members are encouraged to bring a friend to any of our events—curiosity is the best introduction to Scotch.
- Our Annual Corporate meeting will be held on September 19, 2026 and includes an election of officers. Dr. & Mrs. Alan Jackson will host the event. This will be a whisky and food paring event.
